Murray, UTAH (August 24, 2021) – Roger Timmerman, Executive Director of UTOPIA Fiber, announced today the appointment of Aaron Leach to the new role of Chief Technology Officer (CTO) of the company, which is rapidly expanding in a market hungering for access to dependable and faster broadband. Leach, formerly UTOPIA Fiber’s Chief Operating Officer, will now lead the company’s drive to continually enhance and upgrade its system architecture, streamline internal processes, and maximize the customer experience. He also will oversee network acquisition along with key leadership.

“We are very excited that Aaron will be taking on this essential role,” said Timmerman. “UTOPIA Fiber is always seeking innovative ways to develop crucial synergy among UTOPIA Fiber customers, as well as the company’s various partners and vendors to deliver services in the very best way possible.”

In an age where buildout and operations go hand-in-hand, Leach is looking forward to having an impact on the communities UTOPIA Fiber serves, now and in the future. “By building good designs and the important infrastructure municipalities require,” Leach shared, “they’ll be able to provide essential services on a much higher level for decades to come. The advanced fiber technology will help cities to transport massive amounts of data across networks they can rely on to ensure users are well connected.”

He said that at the same time, UTOPIA Fiber will make it possible to enrich entire communities with a better quality of life by increasing broadband equity. “This will impact education, healthcare, economic development, and entertainment,” Leach explains. “We’ll even be able to bring Wi Fi into the parks, smart water monitoring to towns, and detect forest fires long before they become major threats. It’s an amazing opportunity!”

Timmerman noted: “With Aaron’s leadership as CTO, we will continue to grow and build out new Open Access networks, open up marketplace competition, and allow customers to transition seamlessly from one provider to another.”

Leach, his wife, and four children reside in Spanish Fork, where he loves working on old Jeeps. He says he looks forward to the day when he can travel to all seven continents. (Until then, and with a superior Internet connection, he’ll be able to travel widely virtually!)

Murray, UTAH (August 19, 2021) – UTOPIA Fiber announced today that it now has 17 cities in its rapidly growing, all-fiber network after the Syracuse City Council voted recently to sign a contract between the city and UTOPIA Fiber’s sister agency, Utah Infrastructure Agency (UIA). Construction on the $23.5 million project for fiber-to-the-home service is slated to begin in early 2022. It is worth noting that while the partnership will bring fiber internet access to all residents and businesses in Syracuse, Syracuse City is already served with broadband service by multiple ISP’s.

“Bringing UTOPIA Fiber to Syracuse City is very important for our future growth,” said Mayor Mike Gailey. “UTOPIA Fiber will deliver on speed, capacity, and reliability, and more importantly, has the track record to help us be successful. This fits the bill in Syracuse, both for residents and our economic development.”

Including Syracuse City, UTOPIA Fiber provides fiber-to-the-home services in 17 cities and business services in 50, connecting communities to the fastest speeds currently offered in the United States. Residential speeds are offered up to 10 Gigabits per second (Gbps), while business speeds reach 100 Gbps. UTOPIA Fiber is a publicly owned Interlocal Agency that operates as an Open Access network. This means that UTOPIA Fiber builds the infrastructure and enables competition among private sector internet service providers (ISPs) via UTOPIA’s fiber lines.

“We’re really excited to expand the UTOPIA Fiber network to Syracuse City, giving residents and businesses real choice among our 15 private sector internet service providers,” said Roger Timmerman, Executive Director of UTOPIA Fiber. “We know the community well because we’ve been providing connections for schools and businesses in Syracuse City for years. Plus, we already have fiber to the home in nearby cities of Clearfield, Layton, and West Point. This agreement means that every resident in Syracuse City will have access to UTOPIA Fiber, connecting them to the fastest internet speeds available in the United States.”

UTOPIA Fiber’s Open Access model protects a free and open internet without throttling, paid prioritization, or other provider interference. Participating cities can also benefit from various smart city applications that are enabled by the UTOPIA Fiber network including an early wildfire detection system, fast public WiFi, air pollution monitoring services, and more.

Service maps, build-out timelines, and information on how to sign up for UTOPIA Fiber services in Syracuse City will be posted soon at UTOPIAfiber.com.

A UTOPIA Fiber technician gets ready to connect one of the last homes in Midvale City, UT to the high-speed fiber network. UTOPIA Fiber announced today the community-owned network had fully built-out Midvale City, which serves as one of UTOPIA Fiber’s original cities.

Murray, UTAH (August 12, 2021) – Roger Timmerman, CEO, UTOPIA Fiber announced happily today that every address in Midvale, Utah can sign up for service, completing UTOPIA Fiber’s high-speed fiber network throughout the thriving Salt Lake City suburb. Now, all 35,000 residents, anchor institutions, and businesses in Midvale can access the fastest residential and business internet speeds in the United States. Notably, Midvale City, is one of the original 11 cities that founded the UTOPIA Fiber network.

“Completing Midvale City is especially gratifying because its city leaders shared UTOPIA Fiber’s vision from the start, of a net-neutral, fiber-connected future. At the time, residential fiber networks were virtually unheard of in the United States, so my predecessors had to pioneer many modern-day best practices through trial and error,” explained Timmerman. “Now, much of the key learnings gleaned from building UTOPIA Fiber’s original cities, like Midvale, are influencing national broadband policy and innovative funding mechanisms,” he added.

Today, UTOPIA Fiber is laying approximately 45 miles of fiber conduit every few weeks and is fully building cities in months, not years. Investors have taken notice as UTOPIA Fiber—through its financial arm Utah Infrastructure Agency (UIA)—has raised nearly $300 million in the last decade, with over $100 million in the last 15 months alone. A portion of a $52 million capital raised in February was used to quickly complete Midvale City.

“The people of Midvale City are reaping the rewards of sticking with UTOPIA Fiber through the network’s early years,” said Robert Hale, Mayor of Midvale City. “Midvale residents and businesses not only have access to the fastest speeds in the nation, they also have access to Smart City services like free public WiFi, and UTOPIA Fiber’s revolutionary air quality monitoring and early-wildfire detection systems.”

Midvale City joins a long list of Utah cities that UTOPIA Fiber has completed including Brigham City, Centerville, Layton, Lindon, Morgan, Perry, Tremonton, West Point, and Woodland Hills. According to Timmerman, the network has an extensive pipeline of upcoming fiber projects throughout the state.

Today, UTOPIA Fiber provides fiber-to-the-home services in 16 cities, and commercial services in over 50. It operates as an Open Access network, meaning that UTOPIA Fiber builds the infrastructure and allows private sector ISPs to offer net-neutral internet services through public fiber lines. Service starts at $65/month for 250/250 Mbps and residents have the option to choose speeds up to 10 Gbps (up to 100 Gbps for business) from 15 local providers—the fastest internet speeds in the nation.

UTOPIA Fiber Crews Begin Construction of America’s Newest Fiber Network in Pleasant Grove City https://www.utopiafiber.com/utopia-fiber-crews-begin-construction-of-americas-newest-fiber-network-in-pleasant-grove-city/ https://www.utopiafiber.com/utopia-fiber-crews-begin-construction-of-americas-newest-fiber-network-in-pleasant-grove-city/#respond Fri, 06 Aug 2021 15:10:26 +0000 https://www.utopiafiber.com/?p=9079 ‘A Big Day For Connecting America’ As Washington Lawmakers Put Finishing Touches on Broadband Infrastructure Bill and Crews Start Digging in Utah

Pleasant Grove, UTAH (August 5, 2021) At a press conference today packed with city officials, Roger Timmerman, Executive Director of UTOPIA Fiber announced that work had officially begun on an exciting expansion of the company’s rapidly-growing, all-fiber network, bringing ultra high-speed broadband to every home and business in Pleasant Grove City. The $20 million project received a unanimous vote by City Council members in April and will be fully built out by 2023, with the first homes connected to lit fiber in 2022.

As the machinery fired up and work began, Pleasant Grove became UTOPIA Fiber’s 16th city with fiber-to-the-home services.

“It’s a big day for connecting America,” explained Timmerman. “As Senator Mitt Romney and other lawmakers are working hard to finalize the broadband infrastructure bill, UTOPIA Fiber crews are digging here in Utah, bringing ultra-fast and reliable broadband service to Pleasant Grove City.”

UTOPIA Fiber is America’s largest Open Access network, meaning that it builds and owns the infrastructure, but allows multiple private-sector internet service providers (ISPs) to compete, making it easier for them to do business while providing increased broadband access for residents. The Open Access model is completely net-neutral and promotes free-market competition, leading to a higher-level of service and lower cost.

“Although Pleasant Grove City’s 38,000 residents are technically ‘served’ by the cable company, community members have been complaining loudly about slow and unreliable internet service. That changes today,” said Guy Fugal, Mayor of Pleasant Grove. “UTOPIA Fiber is here with a proven trackrecord and a loyal customer base. Most importantly, they have been consistently hitting their revenue marks, which is the ultimate quality measure. We’re very excited to start construction.”

Councilman Eric Jensen said: “One of the biggest questions we get as a City is, ‘when are we going to have more options and when are we going to have fiber?’ Today is that day!”

“Competition solves everything,” noted Timmerman. “We’re excited to connect Pleasant Grove City residents, businesses, and students to the fastest speeds in the country.”

Pleasant Grove City—like every UTOPIA Fiber project since 2009—is on track to be funded and grown solely through subscriber revenue, at no cost to taxpayers.

Including Pleasant Grove, UTOPIA Fiber provides fiber-to-the-home services in 16 cities and business services in 50, connecting communities to residential speeds of up to 10 Gigabits per second (Gbps), and 100 Gbps for business, both the fastest speeds currently offered in the United States. UTOPIA Fiber is a publicly-owned Interlocal Agency. Participating cities also benefit from various Smart City applications that are enabled by the UTOPIA Fiber network including an early wildfire detection system, fast public WiFi, air quality monitoring services, and more.

Pleasant Grove residents and businesses are invited to visit UTOPIAfiber.com for service maps, build-out timelines, and information on how to sign up for UTOPIA Fiber services.

Murray, UTAH (April 28, 2021) – UTOPIA Fiber announced today that it will expand the southern end of its rapidly-growing, all-fiber network, after the Pleasant Grove City Council voted on April 13, 2021 to sign a contract between the city and Utah Infrastructure Agency (UIA is UTOPIA Fiber’s sister agency). The partnership will bring fiber internet access to all residents and businesses in Pleasant Grove City, within the next two years. The unanimous vote to move forward with the approximately $18 million project came after months of vetting. Pleasant Grove now becomes UTOPIA Fiber’s 16th city to contract for the Open Access network’s fiber-to-the-home services. It is anticipated that construction will begin sometime in May 2021.

“For these reasons, I’m pleased that The Accessible Affordable Internet for All Act prioritizes Open Access networks. This act will spur sorely needed competition and lower prices in the marketplace, so that those living in underserved and unserved communities will finally have access to all the digital economy offers. Murray, UTAH (February 18, 2021) – UIA (Utah Infrastructure Agency) has just completed its latest round of funding that will infuse the UTOPIA/UIA network with $52.5 million for the expansion of its network. Utah Infrastructure Agency (UIA) is a sister agency to UTOPIA Fiber. Although legally separate entities, UTOPIA and UIA functionally operate as one integrated system and both are marketed as UTOPIA Fiber. This is the third round of financing UIA has secured recently, attracting $113 million in the last 14 months.

UIA secured the latest round of funding in partnership with Lewis Young Robertson & Burningham, Inc. (Financial Advisor), KeyBanc Capital Markets, Inc. (Senior Managing Underwriter), and Gilmore & Bell (Bond and Disclosure Counsel). Since 2011, the majority of UTOPIA Fiber’s growth has come from its synergistic relationship with UIA, designing, financing, building, and operating state-of-the-art ultra-high-speed fiber-broadband networks, firmly securing its position as the largest publicly-owned Open Access fiber network in the United States.

“What we’re seeing with this latest round of funding is stronger-than-ever demand for high-speed fiber networks,” said Roger Timmerman, UTOPIA Fiber’s executive director. “The $52.5 million provides the capital to build out the remaining areas of our original 11 cities and to add customers throughout our coverage area. We continue to have the best partners in the business, who have worked tirelessly to get us to this point,” he added.

UTOPIA Fiber provides fiber-to-the-home services in 15 cities and business services in 50. They serve as operational parter for Idaho Falls Fiber in Idaho and are in talks with additional municipalities to bring the network to their communities. UTOPIA Fiber is available to 130,000 homes and businesses, offers the fastest internet speeds in the United States (10 Gbps residential and 100 Gbps commercial), and enjoys being ranked as the highest-rated internet option in Utah.

This round of new funding is the largest that UIA has closed on in agency history and the third in the last 14 months ($48 million in November 2019 and $13 million in August 2020). UTOPIA Fiber continues to bring competitive services from 14 internet service providers (ISPs) at the fastest speeds and best value.

UTOPIA Fiber’s Open Access model enables communities to have access to a free and open internet without throttling, paid prioritization, or other provider interference. Participating cities can also benefit from various Smart City applications that are enabled by the UTOPIA Fiber network including early wildfire detection systems, free public WiFi, Smart water and energy management, and air pollution monitoring services.

“The pandemic has shown us just how important fast, affordable, and reliable broadband service is. We believe publicly-owned Open Access fiber networks are the future of American internet connectivity and are excited to be at the forefront of that movement,” Timmerman said.

The public is invited to visit UTOPIAfiber.com for service maps, build-out timelines, and information on how to sign up for UTOPIA Fiber services.

UTOPIA Fiber Announces Completion of Fiber Project in West Point in Just 15 months. https://www.utopiafiber.com/utopia-fiber-announces-completion-of-fiber-project-in-west-point-in-just-15-months/ https://www.utopiafiber.com/utopia-fiber-announces-completion-of-fiber-project-in-west-point-in-just-15-months/#respond Tue, 15 Dec 2020 17:39:58 +0000 https://www.utopiafiber.com/?p=8542 “An Efficient Buildout Plus Astonishingly Fast Sign-Ups”

There are now 20 more cities in UTOPIA Fiber’s pipeline

Murray, UTAH (December 15, 2020) – UTOPIA Fiber announced today that it has fully built its fiber-to-the-home broadband network in the City of West Point, Utah. The $7.2 million project, announced after a unanimous City Council vote, gives every residence and business in West Point access to the fastest internet speeds in America. Remarkably, the buildout was completed in a mere 15 months. West Point is one of 15 cities in Utah that have UTOPIA Fiber’s residential fiber service, and 50 with its business service.

“Sign-ups have been astonishingly fast, which means the project is on track for covering its bond payments with subscriber revenue in the next few months,” said Kimberly McKinley, UTOPIA Fiber’s Chief Marketing Officer. “Strong demand from West Point residents who are working and learning remotely has fueled the high take rates which are months ahead of projections,” she added. Located just north of Salt Lake City, West Point has a population nearing 11,000 and is adjacent to Clearfield City, which in August announced its own $13.8 million fiber-to-the-home project with UTOPIA Fiber. Unlike typical internet companies that cherrypick more-upscale neighborhoods, UTOPIA Fiber builds out the entire community with fiber infrastructure, so every address has the option to use the service. West Point residents can now access UTOPIA Fiber’s internet services starting at $65/month for 250/250 Mbps and will have the option to choose speeds up to 10 Gbps (up to 100 Gbps for business) from 13 local providers—the fastest internet speeds in the nation.

The pandemic has fueled significant interest in UTOPIA Fiber’s publicly-owned fiber service. The network now has a pipeline of 20 cities expressing interest in partnering with UTOPIA, and the agency is laying over 45 miles of fiber cable each month, across its portfolio, to meet surging demand. “City leaders throughout the state are hearing from their constituents who are demanding better connectivity,” notes Roger Timmerman, Executive Director, UTOPIA Fiber. High-speed broadband is not just for entertainment purposes like gaming and streaming. It has become a critical need for working, learning, communicating, and accessing other critical online services like telehealth.“

With over $220 million of successful fiber projects, UTOPIA Fiber is the nation’s largest and most-successful Open Access network. As an Open Access network, UTOPIA Fiber builds and finances the infrastructure and allows multiple private-sector internet service providers (ISPs) to compete on its network, offering internet, video, and voice services.

West Point residents can visit utopiafiber.com for information on how to sign up for UTOPIA Fiber services.
